Take 5 minutes out

After quite a busy day in the office I found my drive home to be a little less mundane than usual. The weather was sunny all day and I did manage to go for a little walk around the local green at lunchtime. I was thinking about the few jobs that would take up my time when I got home – tidying, cooking, washing then a bit of TV and bedtime.
I have lived in Blyth on the Northumberland coast for nearly 10 years and I love the fact that there is the industrial side with the Port and also the ‘prettier’ aspect including the Promenade with the little beach huts and not to mention the well renowned ice-cream parlour!
My partner runs a Charity called Blyth Tall Ship https://www.blythtallship.co.uk/ . As part of the project they own a 100 year old Baltic Trader called the Williams II which is mainly used for leisure trips in the Summer months. I have spent many an hour, day, weekend getting involved in activities associated with the project.
So back to my journey home – what do I see in the distance heading towards the piers? Two dominant masts that belong to the Williams II. This week she has been chartered by The Bristol Port Company as part of Mental Health Awareness week to provide Heritage Sailing Skills, Team Building and Confidence Boosting for a group of Stevedore’s. I spoke to one of the volunteer crew and she said that despite quite a lot of sickness due to the lumpy sea conditions the group were finding it an invaluable experience.
After taking some time out from my usual journey home, it left me feeling relaxed and inspired. Just seeing and hearing the sea is really good for the soul. Perhaps everyone should try a different route home once in a while as you may be surprised by what you might see.
At 2macs we have worked with a number of Ports in the UK to develop their Safety Cultures including companies who commission the Wind Turbines where they are a dominant feature on the horizon of my home town.
