Better Together

I’m going to commit the cardinal sin of any performer – and start this month’s blog entry with an apology. Not for the content, but for giving it a title reminiscent of a political election slogan. You know the kind of thing – A Stronger Britain! Moving Forward! and now apparently…erm…Better Together! But do read on, dear reader, and then let me know if you disagree with the sentiment.

What I’m talking about this month is getting out and about and being involved in an old pet hate of mine – networking. I’ve nothing against the concept of it, it just always brought out the shy young schoolboy in me. Heaven knows why, but for an unashamed extrovert I always shied away from such gatherings.

However, following on from a few internal conversations here at 2macs Towers, I was deputised to go out and see what’s happening in the big, wide world of Health, Safety & Wellbeing. Accordingly, along I went to two recent conference seminars….and loved the whole thing! What I found were bunches of friendly, open, knowledgeable folk who swam in our waters but who I’d never met. Due, no doubt to my own silly pre/misconceptions.

The speakers were interesting – and having presented at conferences all over the world myself I can be a stern critic – and we delegates were encouraged to meet away from the main hall and get to know each other. Introductions were made by our hosts too. From both events, I came away newly energised from many conversations, and with so many new business contacts.

So for anyone reading this out there, this newly converted Health & Safety conference attendee urges you to do the same. Get out there and meet new people who are playing your game too. You may come away like I did with a slightly altered point of view on things you thought you knew inside out.

And when you do, pause and have a look at the main presenters’ names – you may see a couple of us up there on the main stage. Still out there, still encouraging better workplace safety conversations in our own unique, impactful way.
